 What Is Solar PV?

Solar PV stands for Solar Photovoltaics—a technology that converts sunlight into electricity.

These systems use silicon wafer cells encased in glass generate direct current (DC) electricity, when light passes through them, which is then converted into usable alternating current (AC) by an inverter.

Solar PV is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy sources across both the UK and Ireland, and is central to each government’s clean energy strategy.

Long-Term Performance Guarantee

All panels sold by Apollo Solar come with a minimum 30 year performance warranty. This means that after 30 years, your panels are guaranteed to produce at least 87.4% of their original output when new!

Do Solar Panels Work in Ireland?

Yes—solar panels work exceptionally well across the island of Ireland, including both Northern Ireland and the Republic. Modern panels are highly efficient and generate electricity even on cloudy days. Ireland receives enough solar radiation to make solar PV a smart investment for homeowners and businesses.

What’s the Payback on a Solar System?

The payback period depends on factors like:

  • Roof orientation and tilt
  • Shading from nearby trees or buildings
  • Your household’s energy usage

At Apollo Solar, we design every system to match your home and lifestyle. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Our goal is to deliver the most efficient system possible, using the full range of products available.

We aim for a payback period of 6 years or less, with an average tax-free return on investment (ROI) of 17–20%—based on current electricity prices and system performance.

 Battery Storage & Smart Tariffs

Battery storage allows you to store solar energy for use during peak hours. It can greatly decrease the amount of electricity you need to buy!

Solar batteries can increase self-consumption and reduce grid reliance by storing daytime solar energy for use at night or during peak times. A key benefit is storing excess energy that would otherwise be exported, and using this stored power to reduce the amount of electricity imported from the grid, lowering energy bills.

The energy savings trust estimates that adding battery storage to your solar system will greatly increase self consumption. And solar together estimates those could be as high as 40% increase although factors such as lifestyle and consumption patterns will influence this.

More information on how to calculate costs and benefits of battery available in the links below to energy savings trust and solar together.

Additional savings!

With tariffs from energy provides that provide electricity at rates as low as 14p per unit at night you can charge your battery at night and then allow it to discharge during the day when electric costs as much as 33p per unit. This can significantly lower your electric running costs.
